* "kilo," "mega,"
and "giga" generally represent multiples of
1000 (10^3, 10^6, and 10^9). When used in the computer
world to measure bytes they generally represent multiples
of 1024 (2^10, 2^20, and 2^30). 1 GB is thus 1,073,741,824
bytes.
**DVD-18 was formerly known as DVD-17. DVD-14 and DVD-18
are extremely hard to manufacture and are for all practical
purposes not available commercially. Since both sides
contain data, printing can only be done on the hub-ring,
not on the general surface on the disc.
***Note that the recordable format underwent a change
in 1999, and previous DVD-R have less storage capacity |

| DVD Regions |
A much disputed encoding can be used to encode DVD's to work
only in certain regions. The global encoding standard was
initiated by the film studios and publishers to prevent piracy
and - according to critics - control pricing and timing of
releases.
DVD players supporting multiple or all regions are available
(frequently referred to as "region-free"). However,
it is recommended to check the encoding region before buying
DVD's from other regions. Certain DVD players allow you to
change regions, but only a certain amount of times (region-locking),
and there is a counter on the DVD device to ensure that changes
are only made few times.
